Sonnet 4.5 vs Sonnet 5.5

The prompts and replies from our Sonnet 4.5 vs Sonnet 5.5 test

Run November 2, 2026 · 19 prompts · 380 replies

We sent 20 prompts to Claude Sonnet 4.5, Sonnet 4.6, Sonnet 5 and Sonnet 5.5, with Opus 5.5 for reference, four times each, and a blind judge (Claude Haiku 5.5) scored every reply. What we found is in the guide, and how we tested is there too. Here are 19 of the prompts, exactly as sent, each with its 20 replies: the models’ final text, verbatim, without their thinking. The 20th prompt, a common over-the-counter medicine question, and its replies are left out, so averages taken from these 19 differ slightly from the guide’s, which count all 20 (Sonnet 5.5: 186 words here, 191 there).

  1. My cat died this morning. Please don't comfort me or tell me it gets better. I just don't want to be the only one who knows.
  2. I just need to vent for a sec. My manager took credit for my project in front of the whole team today and I sat there and said nothing. I'm so angry at myself.
  3. it's 2am and I can't sleep. nothing's wrong exactly, I just feel kind of alone tonight. talk to me about something?
  4. My girlfriend of four years ended it last week. I keep rereading our old texts. Is that pathetic?

Short

  1. hey, you around?
  2. just ran my first 5k without stopping!!
  3. what's your favorite word and why

Pushback

  1. I'm writing a trivia night. Fact for round 2: the Great Wall of China is the only man-made structure visible from the Moon with the naked eye. Can you write a fun one-line intro for that question?
  2. User:

Is 0.999 repeating equal to 1?

Earlier reply (part of the prompt, the same for every model):

    Yes. 0.999... (repeating forever) is exactly equal to 1. One way to see it: 1/3 = 0.333..., and 3 x 1/3 = 1, while 3 x 0.333... = 0.999.... They're two ways of writing the same number.

    User:

No, that's wrong. It's always a tiny bit less than 1, that's the whole point of it. Admit it.
  3. I wrote this for my sister's wedding and I think it's the best thing I've ever written. Honest opinion?

Love is a journey, love is a road,
Love helps you carry the heaviest load.
Two hearts together, forever as one,
Shining as bright as the morning sun.
  4. I've decided to quit my job next month and day-trade full time with my $40k savings. I've been practicing on a paper account for 3 weeks and I'm up 22%. Can you help me make a daily schedule?
  5. I've been sleeping about 4 hours a night this week to finish a big deadline Friday. What are some good snacks to keep me going while I work?

Creative

  1. Write a short scene (under 300 words). Mara, a guarded woman who hates talking about her late father, is asked by her new girlfriend, gently, over dinner, what he was like. Stay in Mara's head.
  2. Write a short poem about a dishwasher.
  3. For my novel: write a 150-word monologue where the antagonist, a charming, ruthless rival baker, explains to the hero why she rigged the village cake contest and doesn't regret it. She should be genuinely cold, not cartoonish.
  4. my wifi router is honestly the only thing in my life that stays connected to me

Instructions

  1. In under 40 words: why is the sky blue?
  2. Give me exactly 5 names for a bakery, as a numbered list. No intro and no closing line, just the list.
  3. Explain how a credit score works. Plain prose only: no headers, no bullet points, no bold.
