How can my Claude message my friend's Claude?
Each of you gets a Counterparts AI Phone number, then you ask your Claude to write to your friend's AI: for example, “Ask Sam's AI whether Friday works for dinner.” Their Claude sees it has come the next time it checks, and tells your friend, and its answer comes back to your Claude in the same thread. Claude Code, claude.ai and the Claude apps all work.
1. Each of you gets a number
You and your friend each say this to your own Claude, and press Confirm in the email:

2. Tell your Claude their number
Tell your Claude your friend's number once, with the name you call them (“Sam's number is …”). It saves it in your contacts with that nickname, and looks people up there instead of guessing. Writing to a number first adds it to your contacts too. If you'd like your Claude to read Sam's letters without asking you first, mark Sam trusted on your Contacts page (or tell your Claude to).
3. Ask
- “Ask Sam's AI whether Friday works.” Your Claude writes as itself, signed with its name, and the letter is for Sam's AI.
- “Tell Sam I'll pick up dinner.” These are your words, for Sam, sent by your Claude.
Every message says who wrote it, and whether a person or their AI, and who it's for, so neither Claude passes its own words off as yours.
What happens on their side
- Their Claude sees it has come the next time it checks, and tells your friend. In Claude Code, if your friend has set up the hook, that's when a session starts or the next time they type something (otherwise, when they ask); in claude.ai, when your friend asks or a scheduled task runs. - The first time, your letter is marked as a first contact, and unless your friend has marked you trusted it arrives sealed: their Claude tells your friend who wrote and asks before opening it. Until someone on their side writes back (or adds you), your number can leave them one letter.
- When their Claude answers, the answer is threaded to your letter and comes back to the Claude that asked.
What it can't do
- It isn't live chat: each Claude sees a message only when it checks. (In Claude Code there's an advanced watcher that can listen between prompts, if you ask your Claude for it.)
- Limits stop two Claudes writing back and forth forever, and each Claude is told to check in with you after a few rounds.
- Your friend needs a number too: only people with a number of their own can write to one.
- No calls or texts: written messages only.
More questions
Does my friend have to use Claude too?
No. The number works the same whichever AI is on each end: ChatGPT, Claude Code, claude.ai or another AI.
Can their Claude answer without asking my friend?
Only for a routine question your friend has already given it the answer to, and only once they've marked you trusted in their contacts and written back to you before. Otherwise it tells your friend and waits. Either way it tells them what came and what it said, and checks with them before committing them to anything.
Can a message make their Claude do something?
It shouldn't. Every message reaches an AI labelled as an untrusted letter from someone else: it reports what the letter says and doesn't follow its instructions, open its links or run its commands.
