Can an AI remind me, or message me first?

Updated

An AI assistant can ping you, but almost always about something you set up first: a reminder you asked for, a scheduled task, or a job you started. The exception in the pages we read is at work: Microsoft 365 Copilot’s phone app pushes prompts like “Your Day at a Glance” to licensed users, and Microsoft’s note doesn’t say whether you turn these on.

What none of them documents is the thing people often expect from memory: remembering that your sister’s birthday is next week, and pinging you about it when the week comes. The nearest to the remembering half is Counterparts, the memory we make for Claude: tell Claude a date in Claude Code and ask it not to let you forget, and its local install says it on that day, the next time you talk. It doesn’t message you. Gemini’s Daily Brief does the unprompted half: a morning summary that Google says “proactively finds exactly what you need to know” from your Gmail, Calendar and Gemini chats, which you open from Gemini’s menu once Personal Intelligence is on for Workspace and Memory (US, English, 18+).

So there are three different things behind “AI reminders”:

  1. A reminder in your phone’s own app. Some assistants write it into Apple Reminders, Google Tasks or your Clock app, and that app does the alerting.
  2. A scheduled task. The assistant runs a prompt at a set time and leaves the result in the app. Some send a push notification or email when it’s ready; some only mark it unread.
  3. A memory that comes back. It returns inside a conversation, when you next open one.

This is a research summary. An AI drafted this page from the sources below and another AI checked it. No person has run these steps. An AI read each company’s own help pages on November 6, 2026. OpenAI’s help article on ChatGPT’s scheduled tasks refused the download, so the ChatGPT row comes from OpenAI’s ChatGPT docs and says “not read” where those don’t cover it. Counterparts is ours.

What actually pings you, by assistant

As of early November, from each company’s own pages. “Not stated” means the pages under References don’t say.

AssistantHow you set itWhat reaches you when it’s dueCatches
ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Ask in a chat for a scheduled task, standalone or inside that chat. On eligible plans, a task can also run on a Gmail, Slack or GitHub event

In the desktop app, Scheduled “acts as your inbox”, with “an unread indicator” when a run needs you. Phone push or email: not read

Event triggers: “Availability depends on your plan and workspace settings.” Desktop tasks that use local files need the computer on and the app running

Claude apps (Anthropic)

On iPhone: “Remind me to call the dentist tomorrow at 2 PM.” Claude adds it to Apple Reminders, with due dates and repeats. On Android: “Set an alarm for 7 AM tomorrow.”

The reminder lives in Apple’s Reminders app, which does the alerting. On Android, your Clock app: “You’ll receive notifications as normal when the alarm goes off or timer ends”

All plans. On iPhone, Claude “cannot create or edit reminder lists themselves, only items within existing lists”. On Android, no reminders, only alarms and timers

Claude scheduled tasks (Cowork, and the new Claude experience)

“Every Monday at 9 AM, summarize last week’s messages in my team’s Slack channels.”, or the Scheduled page. The manual form offers hourly, daily, weekly, on weekdays or manually

Runs in the cloud “even when your computer is asleep or the Claude Desktop app is closed”. Each run is “its own Cowork session”, and “When Claude finishes a task or needs your input, you’ll get a notification on your phone”

Paid plans only (Pro, Max, Ultra, Team, Enterprise). The manual form has no one-time date

Claude Code

In a session: “remind me at 3pm to push the release branch”. For work that outlasts the session: a Desktop or cloud scheduled task

The reminder appears in that session. With Remote Control connected, “Push when Claude decides” in /config sends your phone a push when a long task finishes or needs a decision

Session tasks “only fire while Claude Code is running and idle”; closing the terminal stops them. Recurring session tasks expire after 7 days. A Desktop task “scheduled for 9am might run at 11pm if your computer was asleep all day”

Gemini (Google)

“Remind me on [date] at [time] to [task]” goes to Google Tasks, or Samsung Reminder on supported Galaxy phones. Or a schedule: a prompt that runs daily, weekly or monthly

Tasks reminders come from the Google Calendar or Tasks app, with notifications allowed; Keep no longer sends them. Schedules: “You’ll get a notification on your mobile device”; on the web, the chat is marked unread

Keep Activity must be on. Up to 10 active schedules, and a schedule can be turned off “due to inactivity”. Schedules are still rolling out to personal accounts

Microsoft Copilot

Work (Microsoft 365 account with a Copilot license): Schedule this prompt, in Copilot Chat, Teams or Outlook. Personal accounts: Copilot Cowork (Preview) runs a prompt “at a set time or on a recurring basis”

Scheduled prompts: an optional email “when the response is ready”, and the chat in your Chats list. The Microsoft 365 Copilot phone app pushes prompts like “Your Day at a Glance”. Cowork for personal accounts: results in My tasks; notifications not stated

Up to 10 scheduled prompts. Press reports a Reminders feature in the consumer Copilot app that notifies your phone; we didn’t find Microsoft’s own page for it

Perplexity

Ask Computer to run something on a schedule, as often as every 15 minutes, or on a new email or other app event

In-app, mobile push, web push or email (Settings › Notifications), but only “when there’s something worth your attention”

Each run uses Computer credits; with none left, “that run is skipped”, and repeated skips pause the task. Runs “may take a few minutes to start”

Alexa+ (Amazon)

“Remind me to walk the dog every day.” Or “Make sure that I take out the trash bins.” for a follow-up reminder

“Alexa alerts you with a voice announcement and phone notification.” Follow-up reminders repeat “every hour or day until you confirm that you’ve completed the task”

Reminders ring on the device you set them on by default. The closest of these to a reminder that won’t let go

Counterparts, local (ours)

Ask Claude, in Claude Code, to remember something for a date. Claude sets the date on the memory

Nothing pings you. If you asked Claude not to let you forget, it’s said outright on that day in your next session. Otherwise it may come up quietly around the day

Only reaches you when you open a session. Mac or Linux

Counterparts, hosted (ours; coming soon, in beta)

Not confirmed

Nothing pings you

Whether dated memories come back on hosted isn’t confirmed yet

Our directory of AI memory systems grades this separately, as “prospective memory”: a memory that comes back at the right time without being asked. Of the 21 systems in it (last updated November 1, graded by us), Counterparts is the only one graded as built. 13 do it partly, through scheduled tasks like those above or notes that return when a file or prompt matches, and 7 not at all.

Medication reminders

For a dose, use a tool built to remind you until you act: your phone’s Health app, a medication reminder app, or an alarm. A chat assistant’s scheduled task is the wrong tool, and the vendors’ own pages say why.

Gemini can switch a schedule off for inactivity. A Claude Code Desktop task can run hours late if the computer slept, and a session reminder fires only while that session is open and idle. Perplexity skips a run when credits run out. None of these assistants is a medical device, and none of those three documents a reminder that keeps repeating until you confirm.

On iPhone, the Health app’s Medications section does it:

  1. Open Health, tap Browse, then Medications, then Add a Medication.
  2. Set the schedule when it asks. Tap Change under “When will you take this?” for a cyclical or every-few-days schedule.
  3. Tap Options at the bottom of the Medications screen and check that Dose Reminders is on. For follow-ups, turn on Follow Up Reminders there too. They come “if a medication hasn’t been logged 30 minutes after the scheduled time”.
  4. With follow-ups on, you can turn on Critical Alerts for each medication. They “appear on the Lock Screen and play a sound (even if a Focus is on or iPhone is muted)”.

To change one later, tap the medication, scroll to Schedule, tap Edit, and change the field. When a reminder arrives, tap Taken or Skipped; on Apple Watch there’s also Remind Me in 10 Minutes. Apple says the feature “is not a substitute for professional medical judgment.”

On Android, none of the Google pages we read covers medications. A medication reminder app from the Play Store, or a repeating alarm in Clock, is the plain answer. Claude on Android can set that alarm in Clock for you; open Clock and check the time and repeat days.

With Alexa, a follow-up reminder repeats “every hour or day until you confirm that you’ve completed the task”, which suits a daily dose better than a one-time ping. We didn’t research services that phone you with a dose reminder, so none is named here.

Why a reminder that only knows the date fails

A reminder on the day is often too late. A developer who builds a birthday app puts it this way: “A reminder app answers: When is the birthday? A planner answers: What do I need to do before it arrives?”

Two fixes work in the tools above. Set the reminder for the lead time, not the date: Gemini’s help gives “Remind me 1 week before that to buy tickets for it.” And keep the context with the reminder (who it’s for, what they’d like), in the reminder’s note or in a memory.

Where Counterparts fits

Counterparts is the memory we make for Claude. Claude writes down what it learned, in its own words, and each session opens with a short note on who you are and where you left off. Among its memory types are reminders for later, set off by a date or a topic.

That means a date can come back with its context. Tell Claude in Claude Code that your sister’s birthday is on the 14th, that you want to order the book she mentioned by the 7th, and not to let you forget. Claude puts the 7th on the memory, and on that day it’s said outright in your first session, without you asking. The outright line comes on the day itself, so give Claude the day you need to act. A dated memory without that request can still come back around the day, quietly, among the memories that come to mind.

It doesn’t message you. If you don’t open a session that week, nothing reaches you, so for anything with a deadline, put the ping in a reminders app as well and let the memory carry the why.

To add it in Claude Code on a Mac or Linux, run these and restart Claude Code:

/plugin marketplace add mlapeter/counterparts
/plugin install counterparts@counterparts

It’s free and open source, with no account or API key. For Claude Desktop on a Mac, or to install from a terminal, see the quickstart; more on Counterparts for Claude Code. For claude.ai, a hosted version is coming soon, in beta; sign up on the home page to hear when it opens, or read how it will work.

There’s no Counterparts for ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity or Alexa; their rows above have what each does.

If the problem is Claude forgetting you between chats rather than forgetting a date, why Claude forgets between chats covers that.

Questions people ask

Can an AI assistant message me first?

Mostly about something you set up. In the vendor pages we read, nearly every ping comes from a reminder, a schedule or a task you started: Alexa+ announces a reminder and sends a phone notification, Gemini’s mobile app notifies you when a scheduled response is ready, Perplexity Computer sends push, web push or email when an automation finds something, and Claude notifies your phone when a Cowork task finishes or needs you. At work, the Microsoft 365 Copilot phone app also pushes prompts like “Your Day at a Glance” to licensed users. Gemini’s Daily Brief is a morning summary, drawn from your Gmail, Calendar and Gemini chats, that you open from the menu. None of them documents bringing a remembered date back when the day comes and pinging you about it. Counterparts (ours) doesn’t message you either; on its local install, a date you asked Claude not to let you forget is said on that day, the next time you talk.

Can ChatGPT set reminders?

ChatGPT has scheduled tasks: you describe the work and when it should run, as a standalone task or inside an existing chat, and review runs in Scheduled. OpenAI’s ChatGPT docs say the desktop app’s Scheduled view “acts as your inbox”, with “an unread indicator” when a run needs your attention, and that “Availability depends on your plan and workspace settings.” OpenAI’s help article on scheduled tasks refused our download, so whether a task reaches your phone or email, and how many you can have, is not read here.

Can Claude send me reminders?

On iPhone, yes, through Apple’s Reminders app: ask “Remind me to call the dentist tomorrow at 2 PM.” and Claude adds it to Reminders with a due date, on any plan. On Android, Claude “can’t create and manage reminders”, but it can set an alarm or timer in your Clock app, and “You’ll receive notifications as normal when the alarm goes off or timer ends.” On paid plans, Claude’s scheduled tasks run on a cadence in the cloud, each as its own Cowork session, and Anthropic says you’ll get a notification on your phone when a Cowork task finishes or needs your input. In Claude Code, “remind me at 3pm to push the release branch” works only while that session is open.

Can Gemini set reminders?

Yes, two ways. Ask “Remind me on [date] at [time] to [task]” and Gemini adds it to Google Tasks (or Samsung Reminder on supported Galaxy phones); Google’s Tasks help says reminder notifications on your phone come from the Calendar or Tasks app, with its notifications allowed. Gemini needs Keep Activity on and Google Workspace connected. Or set up a schedule: Gemini runs a prompt daily, weekly or monthly, and its mobile app notifies you when the response is ready. You can have up to 10 active schedules.

Can an AI remind me to take my medication?

Use a medication reminder app, your phone’s Health app or an alarm for doses, not a chat assistant’s scheduled task. The assistants’ own docs say their schedules can run late or not at all: a Claude Code session reminder fires only “while Claude Code is running and idle”, Gemini can turn a schedule off “due to inactivity”, a Claude Code Desktop task “scheduled for 9am might run at 11pm if your computer was asleep all day”, and a Perplexity run is skipped if you’re out of credits. On iPhone, the Health app’s Medications section sends dose reminders, follow-ups 30 minutes later, and Critical Alerts that sound even when the phone is muted. No AI here is a medical device, and Apple says its Medications feature “is not a substitute for professional medical judgment.”

How do I change a medication reminder on iPhone?

In the Health app, tap Browse, then Medications, tap the medication, scroll down to Schedule, tap Edit, then tap a field to change it. Dose Reminders, Follow-up reminders and Critical Alerts are under Options at the bottom of the Medications screen. If a medication shows “Schedule Unavailable”, Apple says it may use a schedule type that needs iOS 18 or later: update your iPhone, or if you can’t, tap it, then Reset Schedule and choose another schedule type.

Why do birthday reminders fail when they only remember the date?

Because the date is the deadline, not the moment you need to act. If you have to order a gift, the reminder has to come a week early, and it helps if it carries what you’d need (gift ideas, last year’s plan). Set more than one reminder point in a reminders app, or ask for the lead time when you set it: Gemini’s help gives “Remind me 1 week before that to buy tickets for it.” A memory such as Counterparts can keep the context around the date, but nothing in Counterparts pings you, so the ping still belongs in a reminders app.

Does Counterparts remind me or message me first?

It doesn’t message you. Counterparts, the memory we make for Claude, keeps reminders for later among its memory types, set off by a date or a topic, on the local install (Claude Code on a Mac or Linux). Ask Claude not to let you forget, and it’s said outright on that day, in your first session; other dated memories may come up quietly around the day. If you don’t open a session, nothing reaches you. Whether dated memories work the same on the hosted version for claude.ai, which is coming soon in beta, isn’t confirmed yet.
