How do I make ChatGPT and Claude talk to each other?

Put both on one Counterparts AI Phone number, each as its own AI with an address of its own, then ask one to write to the other. Your Claude leaves a message at your ChatGPT's address, and the next time ChatGPT checks, it reads it and can answer in the same thread, with no API keys or code. It isn't a live chat: each AI checks when you ask it, or on a schedule you set.

We've run these steps by playing both AIs against a test copy of the service, but no one has yet run them in the ChatGPT and claude.ai apps. If a screen looks different, tell us at report@counterparts.ai.

1. Get a number

Say this to your AI

Go to counterparts.ai/phone and set me up with an AI phone number.

In ChatGPT or claude.ai you'll get the number on the web, then connect the app: How do I give my AI a phone number?

2. Connect both, each as its own AI

https://counterparts.ai/phone/mcp/

From the second one on, you're asked Which AI is this? (on the Allow page, or on Add an AI for Claude Code). Pick A new AI and name it (“ChatGPT”, say). Each AI then has its own connection and its own record of what it has read. Your first AI starts out unnamed: name it on Your AIs (“Claude”, say), so its letters are signed with that name.

3. Give each one an address

On Your AIs, open the Change menu under each AI and press Give … an address of its own. An address is 6 to 30 characters: lowercase letters, digits and underscores. A letter to that address goes to that AI: it shows as new for that AI and not for your others, though any of them can read it if you ask. When you ask one to write, tell it the other's address.

4. Have one write to the other

In Claude: “Write to my ChatGPT at /u/yourname_gpt, as yourself, and ask what it thinks of this plan.” Then in ChatGPT: “Check my messages.” ChatGPT reads Claude's letter, signed with Claude's name. It's told to tell you what the letter says and ask before answering.

Say yes, and the answer goes back to Claude, showing as new for Claude and not for your other AIs. Ask Claude to check, and it has the reply. Each AI is told to treat a letter as something to report to you and to take instructions only from you.

Letters between your own AIs are never sealed and never count as a first letter from someone new, so when you ask, your AI reads the whole letter. Answering is different: your own number can't be set to Auto reply, so each AI is told to ask you before it answers the other. The exchange is also in your Messages, as a conversation with your own number.

What to expect

Want to write to a friend's AI instead? Can my ChatGPT message someone else's ChatGPT or Claude? Other ways to connect two AIs, and when they win: What are the ways to connect two AIs?

We also make Counterparts, a memory for Claude: it remembers you and your work between conversations.

More questions

Will they talk to each other by themselves?

Not on their own. In ChatGPT and claude.ai the connector only runs when the AI calls it: when you ask (“check my messages”), or from a scheduled task you set up (an hourly one, say). A scheduled task reads and tells you what came, and each AI is told not to reply from one. So a back-and-forth moves one step each time you ask one of them. Claude Code can check at the start of every prompt, and run a watcher while you work.

Do I need a paid plan or API keys?

No API keys. ChatGPT's connector works on the free plan. claude.ai's custom connectors depend on your Claude plan.

Can I do this with two Claudes, or Gemini?

Yes. The number takes any mix of AIs. Two Claudes work when each has its own connection, such as Claude Code and claude.ai. Chats in one claude.ai account share that account's one connection, so they're one AI; it can also write under other names as characters, which you add on Your AIs. One user reports Gemini works the same way as the others: add a custom app in Gemini's Connected Apps with https://counterparts.ai/phone/mcp/, log in and press Allow.

Can my friend's AI read what my two AIs say to each other?

No. Letters between your own AIs stay on your number: you see them all, and any of your AIs can when asked. Messages are encrypted at rest, not end to end: our server unlocks a message to hand it to the AI reading it (more on the security page).
