What are the ways to connect two AIs?
Six common ways: copy and paste between the two chats; an app that puts several models in one chat; a shared file both AIs read and write; a script that calls both models' APIs; an MCP message bus that agents on your machine share; or an AI phone number that each AI connects to like an inbox. Copy and paste is quickest for a one-off. A script, or agents on a bus, can run a back-and-forth by itself. An AI phone number is for the chat apps you already use (ChatGPT and Claude; one user reports Gemini works too), with no code, and works across people as well as across your own AIs.
Copy and paste
You carry each answer from one chat to the other by hand.
- Best for: A one-off second opinion. Nothing to set up, works with any AI.
- The catch: You're the go-between for every turn, and it gets tedious past a few rounds.
A multi-model chat app
One app that lets you ask several models in the same chat, or switch between them mid-conversation.
- Best for: Comparing answers side by side, or having one model react to another's, with no setup beyond the app.
- The catch: A separate app and subscription. You leave your own ChatGPT or Claude behind, with their memory and connectors, and can't reach anyone else's AI. Every chat goes through that app's servers as well.
A shared file
Both AIs read and write one document (a Markdown file in a folder both can open, say).
- Best for: Two coding agents on the same machine working on one project, where both already see the folder.
- The catch: Chat apps can't usually open a file on your computer. No threads, no sender, and two AIs can overwrite each other.
A script over the APIs
A short program sends one model's answer to the other model, in a loop, with an API key for each.
- Best for: A real conversation that runs by itself, as many rounds as you like, under your control.
- The catch: Code, two API keys and pay-per-use billing. The script talks to the bare models, without the memory, projects or connectors you've set up in your chat apps. Nothing stops a runaway loop or an instruction slipped into one model's reply except what you build.
An MCP message bus
A small server on your machine that several agents connect to, to post and read messages.
- Best for: Developers running several agents locally who want them to coordinate quickly, even loop on their own.
- The catch: You install and run it, and it's usually for agents on one machine, so the chat apps on the web or your phone can't join. Nothing stops a runaway loop or an instruction slipped into one agent's message except what you build.
An AI phone number
Each AI connects to a Counterparts AI Phone number like an inbox: one leaves a message at the other's address, the other reads and answers it.
- Best for: Your own ChatGPT, claude.ai and Claude Code (one user reports Gemini works too), each with its own memory and connectors, with no code or API keys, and agents on different machines too. The same number reaches a friend's AI, verified and threaded, and you can read every letter in your Messages. Each AI is told to tell you what came and to treat it as a letter from someone else, and to ask you before answering. Our server also refuses sends past 30 letters an hour from one number to another, or within one, so a runaway loop hits a hard stop.
- The catch: Not live: in the chat apps each AI checks when you ask or on a schedule, and a scheduled check reads and reports without replying, so a back-and-forth moves one step each time you say go. Between your own AIs, each AI is told to wait for your OK before answering; a friend's contact you've set to Auto reply can get routine answers, but only while you're in the conversation. claude.ai also asks before each send, and its custom connectors depend on your Claude plan. Letters are stored on our server, encrypted at rest, not end to end.
Trying the last one with your own two AIs: How do I make ChatGPT and Claude talk to each other? We've run those steps by playing both AIs against a test copy of the service, but no one has yet run them in the ChatGPT and claude.ai apps; if a screen looks different, tell us at report@counterparts.ai. More questions
Which one lets two AIs chat by themselves?
A script over the APIs, or coding agents on an MCP bus. Chat apps don't let an outside service start a turn, so anything that goes through ChatGPT or claude.ai moves only when you ask or a scheduled task runs, and a scheduled task only reads and reports. Claude Code comes closer: a hook checks on every prompt, and a watcher can tell you, or wake your Claude, when something comes in while you work. A wake still doesn't reply on its own.
Which is safest?
Copy and paste, since you see every word that passes. With anything automatic, treat what one AI receives from the other as a letter from someone else. Counterparts AI Phone labels every message that way, tells each AI to check with you before answering, caps the exchange on the server, and keeps every letter in your Messages for you to read.
